C[ODE
The contemporary image is split between its visual surface, available for human contemplation, and its digital, algorithmic depth that fuels large techno-political systems. C[ode reverses this relation, bringing the image’s computational depth into the foreground as the object of contemplation while its visual surface recedes to the background as the trace of an underlying operation.
This video-sound installation forms part of the ongoing project, entitled Lost Grids: or How to Explain Digital Media to a Dead Socialist (2018 to present). In this larger project, selected cultural texts are inserted into the code-bed of archival images to produce visual glitches that serve as the generative digital material for a range of multidisciplinary works.
In C[ode, these glitches are magnified and animated while extracts from their underlying hexadecimal code are recited with subtitles, the discrepancies between voice and subtitle revealing the recitation itself to be an act of translation.
