Peter Freund is an artist and educator based in the San Francisco Bay Area. He works with the moving image in single-channel and installation formats and more recently with conceptual digital printmaking. He has exhibited in the USA, Canada, Latin America, Europe, Russia, Asia, and the Middle East. His work is largely preoccupied with the element of fantasy that structures historical memory. Freund is Professor of Art at Saint Mary's College of California, where he teaches experimental media production and critical theory.
Now on a year-long sabbatical, Peter is living in Barcelona, Spain with his wife and son. In January 2019 he completed a research residency with the Barcelona Contemporary Art Museum (MACBA) and a studio residency with the Werner Thöni Artspace (WTA). At WTA, he had a two-month solo exhibition of his current work in progress, Lost Grids. Peter is now collaborating on a project as visiting artist with the Department of Fine Art at the University of Barcelona.
